Honoring Patrick

Patrick Kelly stitched a fashion legacy exemplified by irreverent wit, transatlantic style, and boundless creativity. Though his fashion star took flight upon his arrival in Paris in 1980, the celebration of his Black, southern roots—continuously woven throughout his work—always pointed to the steadfast pride he maintained in knowing from where and whom he had come.

His journey would take him to the top of the fashion industry’s gilded towers, culminating in 1988 with his landmark admission to the prestigious Chambre syndicale du prêt-à-porter des couturiers et des créateurs de mode; Kelly was the first American and first Black person to be granted this privilege.

In advocating for the community of Black fashion professionals, The Kelly Initiative seeks to honor the trailblazing path paved by Mr. Kelly, while creating opportunities for current and future generations of talented Black creatives to leave their unique marks on the fashion industry.
